English Stress Doesn't Stay in One Spot
In Hungarian, stress always lands on the first syllable — but English loves to move it around.
Hungarian speakers have a built-in habit: every word gets stressed on syllable one. It's automatic and reliable in your native language, so it's easy to carry that rule into English — but English stress can land almost anywhere, and moving it can change meaning or just sound off. Think of 'photograph' (PHO-to-graph), 'photography' (pho-TOG-ra-phy), and 'photographic' (pho-to-GRAPH-ic) — same root, three different stressed syllables. Stress the first syllable every time and native listeners may struggle to recognize the word at all. Today, pick three multi-syllable words you use often at work or school. Look up their stress pattern (dictionaries mark it with a small mark before the stressed syllable), say each word out loud five times, exaggerating the stressed syllable, then use it in a short sentence. Your ear will start noticing the pattern in other people's speech too. This one habit — checking stress before you say a new word — pays off fast, so keep at it!
